Florida status:  Introduced. giant weed

Recognition:  Giant ditch-dwelling reed having broad, very strongly auriculate leaves.  The basal regions/auricles are white or tan.  Auricles reach around the stem.  The leaves inserted evenly along the stem like the steps of a ladder.  The inflorescence is a large flame-shaped panicle.

Hymenachne is also very large with conspicuous clasping auricles.
