Natural range:   West Indies and tropical America

Habitat:  Wet pastures and other disturbed sites

Florida status:  Introduced forage crop which escaped cultivation.

Recognition:  Large (100-200 cm) decumbent plant.  Sheaths with papillose-based hairs. Spikelets 3.2-3.6 mm, unawned.
