Natural range:  Mostly in the southeastern U.S., Texas to New Jersey

Habitat:  Wet sites, shores, seasonal ponds, ditches

Florida status:   Native

Recognition:  Rhizomatous and spreading, able to form large stands.  Thin-leaved.  Blades flat, the bases subcordate.  Inflorescence branches upright and appressed to main axis.  Spikelets (2.0)2.4-2.7 mm.  Lower glume ˝ spikelet length, wrapped around.  “Fruit” soft.   Compare with P. tenerum which has narrow involute leaves.
