Natural range:  Mesoamerica, Caribbean, South America

Habitat:  Lawn and roadside grass, escaped into disturbed areas

Florida status:  Introduced, abundant as turf grass

Recognition:  Rhizomatous.  Plants may be highly pubescent.   Inflorescence Y-shaped.   Rachis broad (around 1.2 mm wide).  Spikelets solitary, 2.5-3.5 mm long, ovate, glabrous.  Veins 5 & 5. 

Overall shape variable, depending on conditions and cultivar.  Popular cultivars are 'Pensacola' (larger, coarser, roadsides), and 'Argentine' (lawns).
