Saccharum

Saccharum giganteum (Walter) Pers.

Synonym:  Erianthus giganteus (Walter) P. Beauv.

Natural range:  Eastern U.S. to Mesoamerica

Habitat:  Low wet sunny sites, ditches, shores, swamps

Recognition:  Large cane having conspicuously pubescent ligule area, and with feathery-fuzzy spikelets, the sessile ones 4.5-6 mm long.  Straight awns to 24 mm long (not awned in S. officinarum).

Florida status:  Native, common in our area
