Distribution: Oklahoma to South America

Habitat: Marshes, shallow ponds, seasonally immersed depressions. Freshwater

Florida status: Native, common

Recognition: To 3' tall, the stems hollow and fully septate (E. cellulosa may have partial cross-walls), the spikelet equaling the stem in diameter. Perianth bristles retrorsely barbed (vs. smooth in E. cellulosa). E. cellulosa is a saline species and has partly septate spongy (vs. hollow) culms.
