Distribution: New Jersey to Mexico

Habitat: Often in dry sand, high pine woods, scrub

Recognition:  Spikelet clusters cylindric, thimble-shaped.

Cyperus ligularis has cylindirc spikelet clusters too, but differs by being a much larger plant (culm ca. 1 cm in diameter basally vs. much smaller) and dark brown (vs. pale) spikelets.

Cyperus retrorsus differs from C. croceus by having more-cylindric spikelet clusters, and 40-120 (vs. 10-50) rounded (vs. flat) spikelets.

Florida status: Native, common
