Eleocharis baldwinii (Torrey) Chapman Distribution: Southern U.S. Habitat: Low moist places, often forming a "lawn" in seasonal pools and in depressions in sandy roads Recognition: Small "grassy" species. Spikelet scales usually 2-ranked. Often vivaparous (the top of the plant arching to the ground and rooting there) Eleocharis nigrescens is of similar size but has scales spiral, and perianth bristles absent. Florida status: Common, the most frequently encountered small grassy Eleocharis in our area
