Distribution:  Southern U. S.

Habitat:  Miscellaneous wet habitats

Recognition:  Plants tending to be tall (>1 m), the spikelets in a dense head, this hemispherical to globose.  This is one of our two species having retrorsely barbed perianth bristles:  This species has achenes 3 mm long vs. 2.5 mm in R. microcephala.

Florida status:  Native.
